Hello gents,
So we've already talked about broadcast our races for season 2; in the last few days, we've also started sketching out the schedule and making some changes to the format as we continue to develop the series. I've summarized them below so you can take a look and have a chance to comment.
1. Schedule
(We'll fill in the specific events later when we have more information on the iRacing schedule.)
2. Race Length
We will be adding 15 minutes to our current "standard race" (i.e. 75 minutes) and adopt a new standard of 90 minute race length.
We'll do a new analysis on fuel capacity and determine if we should keep the 55% (i.e. 35 minutes of driving) or consider an alternative that brings tire management into the calculus.
3. Bonus Championship Points
Adding bonus points for pole position (+1); fastest lap (+1)
4. Penalty Points
Paul D. did some research and found an elegant system we liked currently used by the "Spirit of VLN" league (www.spirit-of-vln.com/index.php/rules).
To summarize, championship points are deducted based on the incidents per lap ("IPL") at the end of the race ... so for example, -0 points for an IPL of .5 or less, -2 points for an IPL between .51 and .75, -4 points for an IPL between .76 and 1.00, and -6 points for an IPL over 1.00. So if I received 16 incidents over a 30 lap race, that's equal to a .53 IPL (16/30 = .53) which would translate to -2 penalty points.
In my opinion, it's a simple, yet clever system that gives a tangible incentive to driving cleanly. The formula also works well for short or long tracks since it's based on distance (i.e. # of laps in the denominator).
5. Multi-class Racing
I said last season that I would really like to add multi-class racing to our championship, but it's the chicken or egg question:
The Chicken: We need to have more drivers before we split the league into 2 classes (HPD and DP).
The Egg: We won't attract HPD drivers because we don't have an HPD class (heck we don't even advertise on the HPD forums yet).
I used to think like the chicken, but I'm starting to see things from the egg's point of view. So once again, starting with our 3/21 exhibition races we will make another attempt at developing a multi-class series.
6. Name Change
In 20/20 hindsight I think I should've branded the series as : Global Sportscar Championship ("GSC") or Global Endurance Champsionship ("GEC") to keep with the naming conventions at the GRAsim (e.g. "GV8", "GTCC", "GGT3"). It means tweaking the logo out, but I'd prefer to do this now before we get more recognition.
Thanks for being a part of our league, and please feel free to chime in with any thoughts or opinions - Eduardo
