Welcome to a new section of GRASim, the Tech Shop! Here we will discuss telemetry and how to use it to make yourself a better driver. Don't be afraid of telemetry. There is a wealth of information available through telemetry to compliment driver feedback. Even studying driver inputs can yield quicker lap times without changing anything in the car! Each week I will cover one topic to help break down telemetry into tiny bits to make it more manageable for those just starting to use it. But remember, this knowledge will only make you a better driver, not a faster driver. There is no substitute for practice and experience. I'm almost never the fastest, but I'm consistently up near the front.
What Do You Need For Telemetry In iRacing?
-Telemetry Software
You can use either Motec or Atlas. For this series, I will be using Motec. I just switched over to it from Atlas and find it much more beginner friendly. There is a specific version you need which is here:
Motec i2 Pro
-MU Telemetry Exporter for iRacing
MU iRacing Forum Thread
-Motec Workbork
I just started using Motec, so I grabbed Peter Chamberlain's Motec P15 Workbork and gotten familiar with it. I like it so much that I'm sticking with it!
Peter Chamberlain's P15 Workbook
Install Motec and Mu. Open Mu and keep it running in the background. Closing the window will still keep it running.
Mu Settings
Input and output is the default directory. Change it if you need to. Change the units to whatever you want. For this I will be using Imperial. I have auto-enable telemetry on to make sure I can't forget to record data. Save current setup is on as a backup feature incase I accidently overwrite a setup or lose them altogether.
Extract the Motec P15 workbook and put it in the "Documents\Motec Projects" directory. It's the last file in Peter's post. This will be your master project. ALWAYS create a copy of this project for a new car or track. Never work out of this master project. When you are ready to load telemetry, open Motec and open an existing project. If you haven't already made a copy of the master project, load it and save it as a new project.
The second file is the color schemes for the workbook. Put this file in, "C:\Program Files (x86)\MoTeC\i2\1.0\Schemes". To load the color scheme, open a project. Go to Tools -> Options -> Colours -> Select Scheme
Motec Front Page
Color Scheme Options
Now you're ready to go out there and start recording telemetry!

"To start with, the first thing a beginner should do, as far as setting up his car is concerned, is complete as many possible laps without worrying about other drivers. He must try to learn all about the car, systematically changing key components to see how they affect it: try a different anti-roll bar, softer then harder springs, adjust aerodynamic downforce, that sort of thing. Even in the junior formulae, driving skill alone is not enough, so you must know how to get the most out of your chassis. At that skill level, you can probably gain a second per lap through skillful driving, but lose three times as much by setting up the car incorrectly."
