I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, and it seemed general discussion was as good a place as any. Please let me know if it is not the correct place.
Anyway, as most of you know I've been having some connection issues. I must admit that until yesterday, I didn't know that most of the fields in the FPS box are connection indicators (latency, quality, and sync). Although I have wondered in the past, I never took the time to find out. I've been working with my ISP to troubleshoot, and their tech was at my house for 3 hours on Saturday working with their office to troubleshoot and balance my connection. I have to say it has improved quite a bit after this latest work, but I'm still not quite sure how stable it is.
I took the time to find out what the FPS box fields were and have been using that along with my video captures to compare and try to get a feel if my connection is stable. Unfortunately I don't have a capture from when I know my connection was good, so I'm not quite sure what a fairly stable and non blinking connection is going to look like using the tools I have available.
I watched the connection bars on the FPS box in the last few race captures where I know I was blinking (Sonoma league race, Zolder League race, and Zolder Americas race on thurs). I suspect that the latency bar is the most telling for my connection. In both of the Zolder races it stayed mostly orange, but went red quit a bit. However, even when it was going red, the quality and sync bars were mostly dark with small flashes of green.
I did some practice sessions tonight and kept an eye on the FPS box and checked my ping every couple laps. On the american servers my ping was between 65 and 160, and usually stayed between 100 and 120. The latency bar did go orange quite a bit, but nothing like what I was seeing in the captures. I also entered a practice session on an Aussie server and my ping was between 250 and 300. The latency bar stayed solid orange pretty much the entire time with a few flashes of red.
At this point I think I may be ok on american servers, but have yet to try anything other than practice sessions. I think I'll enter the Americas race tomorrow, but I'll be keeping an eye on my connection. I suspect I'll need to get a feel for what's a decent connection, and what isn't, but wondered if anyone had any suggestions or advice.
Sorry to be long winded, I tend to use 50 words when 10 will do.
